Ladder to “EST”

THE SCENE:
Wet-not the humid kind of wet though. Just the precipitation kind. It was a little bit of a bummer because I brought the guilty pop playlist and had to leave the Bluetooth in the car. I guess my phone speaker would have to suffice.

THA-THANG:
Mosey south on the dark trails to the golf course for the first ladder exercise.

Run up(hill) to the tee Box – 1 Merkin – Run back.

Run back up(hill) to the tee box – 2 Merkins – Run Back.

Rinse and repeat, increasing reps by 1 until we reached 5 Merkins. Then for reps 6-10, we changed from merkins to burpees.

Finally, since that pain was not enough we did the entire thing again, but we started with 10 merkins and descended reps. Merkins 10,9,8,7,6 and Burpees 5,4,3,2,1.

Mosey back to startex.

We then lined up for some suicide ladders, which consisted of sprinting from one side of the parking lot to the other and performing an exercise starting with 5 reps, 10 reps, 15 reps, and then 20 reps. Exercises were squats, bobby hurleys, and calf raises. Somewhere in the middle of my bobby hurleys Climate Control emerged on the scene and I assume he just ran around the Old Forest looking for us until 6:08.

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
Often times in life, we pause and ask ourselves, “How am I doing?” This can be a loaded question that assumes that I need to be a certain way to “succeed” or “make it” or fill in the blank on what you might be striving for. When we ask that question we are often looking at other people and wondering “How do I compare to them?” Am I higher on the ladder then they are and look down on them and judge them for not being as smart, funny, successful, wise, etc as me? Or do I look up at the person higher than me with contempt wondering why they are so much higher than me? it’s probably because they have more money, a nice car, a certain degree, etc. That ladder doesn’t lead to a goal though. It leads to “est.” A place that is unachievable because there will always be someone higher than you on that ladder unless you claim to be God. It just keeps climbing. Because when you pass someone on the ladder you just realize that there is another person ahead of you that you need to pass, and so on and so forth.

Sometimes the easiest thing to do when you recognize you’re on the ladder is to jump off. When you live off of the ladder you realize that everyone is the same. All of us are flawed, weird, abnormal – humans. Sometimes we can catch ourselves trying to get back on the ladder to “est”. And when we find those patterns or behaviors, just go ahead and recognize that it’s okay that you are who you are and jump off the ladder.

MOLESKIN:
I should mention that the ladder isn’t a ladder of goals. I think it’s important to strive for your goals and to set reasonable goals, but if those goals are causing contempt of judgment, to re-evaluate and wonder if your back on that ladder.
