Strength and Decency by Theodore Roosevelt
A snippet from this famous speech:
It is peculiarly incumbent upon you who have strength to set a right example to others. I ask you to remember that you cannot retain your self-respect if you are loose and foul of tongue, that a man who is to lead a clean and honorable life must inevitably suffer if his speech likewise is not clean and honorable. Every man here knows the temptations that beset all of us in this world. At times any man will slip. I do not expect perfection, but I do expect genuine and sincere effort toward being decent and cleanly in thought, in word, and in deed. As I said at the outset, I hail the work of this society as typifying one of those forces which tend to the betterment and uplifting of our social system. Our whole effort should be toward securing a combination of the strong qualities with those qualities which we term virtues. I expect you to be strong. I would not respect you if you were not. I do not want to see Christianity professed only by weaklings; I want to see it a moving spirit among men of strength. I do not expect you to lose one particle of your strength or courage by being decent. On the contrary, I should hope to see each man who is a member of this society, from his membership in it become all the fitter to do the rough work of the world; all the fitter to work in time of peace; and if, which may Heaven forfend, war should come, all the fitter to fight in time of war. I desire to see in this country the decent men strong and the strong men decent, and until we get that combination in pretty good shape we are not going to be by any means as successful as we should be.

1. Words are a gift from God
The ability to use words at all is a gift that has been given to all us by our Creator. As such, we have a responsibility to use our words well. As we’ve seen, God was the first one to harness the creative force of words;and he has entrusted us with the same ability to use words to create the world around us. Given the substantial nature of this gift, we can’t just throw our words around any old way we please; they contain too much power. The only acceptable response to the gift we’ve been given is to show respect to the Giver by using it well.

2. Words can build up or tear down
As a kid, you probably chanted the phrase “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” I know I did. With a little age and experience, we come to realize that even though it sounds good in theory, the phrase is just plain wrong. Words can hurt. I bet you don’t have any problem remembering the last harsh words that were spoken to you or the last encouraging words you received. Other people’s words can have an incredible impact on us, whether we want them to or not. They have the ability to create the atmosphere of our lives. They also have the ability to create atmosphere for others.

3. The quality of your life is determined by the quality of your words
The way you choose to communicate will ultimately affect every area of your life. Words aren’t neutral. Every word that goes out has a consequence attached to it. How you speak to your friends, family members, and coworkers will determine the quality of those relationships. Your internal dialogue with yourself will determine the quality of your actions and interactions each day. It naturally follows that the quality of your life is determined by the words you speak.

Uncommen Words of a Leader
Numbers 14:5-9 – “5 Then Moses and Aaron fell facedown in front of the whole Israelite assembly gathered there. 6 Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, tore their clothes 7 and said to the entire Israelite assembly, ‘The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good. 8 If the Lord is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us. 9 Only do not rebel against the Lord. And do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will devour them. Their protection is gone, but the Lord is with us. Do not be afraid of them.’”

In the midst of people second-guessing God, Joshua stood his ground and stated “…The Lord is with us. Do not be afraid…”

There are many things I love about Joshua. But the best part of this passage is that Joshua wasn’t just stating his opinion but rather testifying to what he had seen and what God said He was going to do for the people of Israel.

A leader isn’t just the loudest of the group, and he is not the biggest of the group. He is the person who God has positioned and prepared for the role of leadership. While it may not have been anticipated, it was a seamless change of leadership from Moses to Joshua because God had prepared Joshua ahead of time. Notice that Joshua stated his view and challenged the Israelite assembly. He didn’t insult them or intimidate them… he spoke the truth!

What kind of leader are you? Are you the most forward in the group and the first to step up? Or do you only seek the role of leadership when no one else will? While leadership skills may be built into your DNA, those skills have to be honed to be a benefit for others. How many times do you hear Jesus yelling at people to get their attention in the Bible? People would gather around pushing and shoving just to get near him and listen to what he had to say.

Leadership comes in many forms, and you may find that your family is waiting for you to lead. Your career is waiting for you to lead. Do so in boldness with faith without fear.

Danger is Your Business
Our King, Jesus Christ, calls us to a new kind of life, His kind of life. “Follow me” is quoted more than fifteen times in the Gospels. Following Him, however, goes against prevailing culture—for which safety and security are utmost priorities. The kind of life to which Jesus calls us is not safe, nor secure.

Here’s a report from a man, the Apostle Paul, who lived it: Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one. Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea; on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my
own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers; in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure. (2 Cor. 11:24-27)

God didn’t design Paul for safe or secure; nor did He us. We’re all designed for big, dangerous lives: “. . . for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control” (2 Tim. 1:7).

Okay, so what do we do?
Insert your name into 2 Timothy 1:7:

“. . . for God gave [ . . . you . . . ] a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”

Read it through again. Now, fast-forward to the end of your life; imagine friends and family saying that of you: “He was fearless. He had power and love and self-control.” What do you need to begin now, to ensure those words then? What bold changes will you make? Remember, your days are numbered (Ps. 90:12). Commit, brother, to make at least one change this week.

I Declare War

In the words of Warren Wiersbe: “The Christian life is not a playground; it is a battleground, and we must be on our guard at all times.” Before we even jump into this idea of declaring war, we have to acknowledge this reality: whether we want to admit it or not, we are in a war, and you can’t win a battle you won’t admit you are in. The Christian life is a war of fighting to live in the spirit and not in the flesh. Paul put it this way in *Romans 7: “For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.”*

If that Dr. Seuss tongue twister doesn’t perfectly exemplify the internal struggle bouncing around in all of our minds, I don’t know what does. We are masters of getting in our own way. Yes, the devil hates you. Yes, the world is out to get you, but you’ve got enough going on under the hood to take yourself out of the game.

Your self-sabotaging mechanism might be your negative thoughts, it might be your actions (or lack thereof), your bad behavior or short temper. It might be your harsh speech or the way you mindlessly turn to social media or food to distract yourself from what is really going on. We all have a vice. The problem isn’t that we struggle with these things, the problem comes when we refuse to acknowledge them, when we decide it is easier to go quietly into the night instead of putting up a fight.

I don’t believe that we don’t desire victory in our lives; no one wants to be stagnant – stuck in a rut of the same ol’ roadblocks. It’s just that we don’t want to put in the hard yards or commit to God’s instructions that show us the way we can live as victors. Let me tell you, our world offers lots of distractions to thwart the chaos caused by our unruly actions and thought lives, but these “fixes” at their best are simply that: distractions. Jesus offers something better.

So this is the day. God brought you to this moment to declare war. On your darkness, on your demons, on your self-sabotaging tendencies, on the version of yourself that you don’t want to be, to throw off the gloves, and rise to the fight, to commit to leaning in as we tackle vital components of the inner struggle.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. — Sun Tzu from Art of War

Do Hard Things

An interesting map is on display in the British Museum in London. It’s an old mariner’s chart, drawn in 1525, outlining the North American coastline and adjacent waters. The cartographer made intriguing notations on areas of the map that represented regions not yet explored. He wrote, “Here be giants,” “Here be fiery scorpions,” and “Here be dragons.” Fortunately, explorers ignored his warnings—and discovered whole new continents as a result!

The cartographer’s notes did not reflect truth—they reflected fear. In our own lives, it’s not actual giants, scorpions, and dragons that keep us from doing hard things. It’s the fear of them. Once we take that scary first step with God’s help—and keep going forward—we’ll experience the bigger, more fulfilling life God has in mind for us.

Fear is the fence that keeps us stuck in our comfort zones. To be fair, we usually feel fear for a reason: often something is outside that should make us afraid. The problem is when we just sit there.

We wait. And we wait.

Why? We’re waiting to stop feeling afraid before we attempt anything. We’re often afraid to try something new because of painful past experiences. We tried stepping out before, and it blew up in our faces. We poured everything we had into something we cared about, and our efforts fell short. We don’t want to embarrass ourselves again.

The truth, though, is that if we’re waiting until the fear and feelings of inadequacy go away, we’ll never venture outside our comfort zones. Until we take a step in spite of our fears, none of us will ever truly be able to do hard things. If we want to continue to grow and learn for the rest of our lives, we must beat these fears—not by making them go away, but by recognizing that there is something worse than discomfort, worse than the unknown, worse than failure. The worst thing is to never try at all.

God is ready to work through us, even with our limitations. Instead of worrying about future fears, we can, as Corrie ten Boom wrote, “Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.”

How could your life be different if you chose to do hard things by stepping outside your comfort zone?

No Record of Wrong
Forgiveness can get complicated in marriage relationships. We think if we forgive our spouse for what they did, they might feel they got off easy and not learn their lesson and do the same thing again. We think if we forgive our spouse for what they did, it doesn’t let them know how much they hurt us. We complicate forgiveness by having our own agenda instead of God’s agenda. We think, “if God really knew what my spouse did, He would understand. God doesn’t expect me to forgive that does He?” When we withhold forgiveness from our spouse, it can give us a false sense of power. We have something they want. We have control of when we say, “I forgive you.” All of this might make sense in a movie or a television drama, but in a Christian marriage, no.

The truth is that God is God and we are not. God tells us to forgive. It’s not a “when you are ready,” or “when they have suffered enough” forgiveness. It’s forgive because I forgave you. It’s a Calvary hill forgiveness. Somehow in the midst of our hurt, we forget about that. We forget that Jesus gave His life so we could be forgiven. Our role is to forgive. What happens next is up to our spouse and to God.

I know this for certain: When a person withholds forgiveness from their spouse, it never affects the spouse as much as it does the unforgiving person. God did not create us to be judges. That is His role and He is ever just and fair. In your marriage, be quick to forgive and resolve issues. It’s what God tells us to do.

Putting Out Fires

THE SCENE: 81˚ feels like 88˚. Perfect day for putting out fires.

F3 WELCOME & DISCLAIMER Done and done well.

WARM-O-RAMA:

Arm circles x 20 IC, Reverse AC x 20 IC, DPs x 15 IC, IWs x 20 IC

THA-THANG:
Mosey to Gazebo as Start point bringing CMUs and a Water Cup.

EXERCISE 1

Putting Out Fires
(supposed to be teams for competition, but with 3 PAX, did as a team)

1 full 5 gallon jug of water at start and 1 empty 5 gallon water jug 15 yd away.

PAX 1 as Fire Truck, lifts CMU while PAX 2 fills water cup from full jug and places on CMU to balance and carry said water without spilling to empty jug for ‘putting out fire’ (Any spilling earns 5 penalty burpees)

PAX 2, as Ladder Truck, carries another CMU and does rows with it, walking alongside PAX 1. PAX 2 takes cup from PAX 1 to start filling the empty jug.

PAX 3, as Pumper Truck, carries a full 44lb water jug alongside PAX 1 and 2.

Once water in cup is transferred into water jug at end, PAX return to start point. PAX with CMUs continue doing rows and 3rd PAX carries the 44lb jug.

At start point, PAX swap roles and RINSE/REPEAT process attempting to transfer all the water from one jug (source) to other jug (fire).

PAX transferred about 1/2 of the water before time ran out to start next exercise.

EXERCISE 2

11s at Land of Plenty parking lot
(10 day rule on ground fries, although they appeared to be on day 11)

1 BBS, bear crawl across parking lot, 10 Merkins, backpedal to start
Rinse & Repeat adding one BBS, and subtracting one Merkin each round maintaining the 11.

MARY:
No time left.

Stranger Things

Perseverance, Strength, Endurance, Grit…These are all words that most everyone wants to have describe them. We want to be tough, to be able to handle whatever life may throw at us, and there is nothing wrong with that desire. In fact, those are all good things to aspire to! However, Peter reminds us at the beginning of his 4th chapter that the path to those things spiritually is often through suffering. That sounds cruel or depressing, but it’s a fairly universal principle we see in lots of other areas of life.

If you want a muscle to become stronger, you don’t coddle it or never let it see pain or hardship…. any “fitness expert” who tells you that is trying to take all your money. To make a muscle stronger you make it suffer! You make it burn, make it strain, make it apply more force than it ever has before – and after all of that pain and exhaustion, your muscle recovers in the following couple days, and is left stronger than it was before. This should not surprise us, but this if often how God strengthens our “spiritual muscles” as well.

The reason Peter says that “whoever suffers in his body is done with sin,” is not to call us to some sort of weird self-inflicted physical punishment to overcome our sins. (You would think that goes without saying, but history has had a handful of groups interpret it this way) No, what Peter is saying is that if you have endured hardship, trusted God to lead you through horrific situations, or – in the case of his specific audience – been physically tortured for following Christ, then your faith will have been strengthened to such a degree that sin will have lost its grip on you. To be honest, the times I reflect on when sin had the biggest hold on me were the times I was most comfortable in my life and my faith. Pursue Jesus, be a “stranger” in this world, take some heat for it, wrestle and struggle and endure some tough times for the sake of living like Jesus would, and Peter promises you will find sin has a much weaker grip on your life.

MOLESKIN:
Although Soulja Boy is ‘Not a Professional’ for workouts, he is most certainly a Professional PLC + PBC gent with his Tupperware® and Cold Brew w/additives.

Syllable Saving is a real thing as Trugger and SoBoy know. Thanks to SB for the actual name for that.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Forgot to mention, but F3 Memphis anniversary workout event is August 17 at Mothership.

Hydration Hell

THE SCENE: brisk 75. Bell Ringer and HomeWrecker beat me there and I was early.

F3 WELCOME & DISCLAIMER Howdy Fellers!
WARM-O-RAMA:

Arm Circles x 20 IC, Reverse AC x 20 IC, Daisy Pickers x 20 IC, Imperial Walkers x 20 IC

THA-THANG:
Used the hill right off parking lot instead of stadium stairs (questionable sturdiness from neglect, plus didn’t want to tote the Four 44lb water jugs down there).

Water up Everest
Set up PAX in 2 teams, one with 4 PAX, one with 5 PAX at base of hill. Half of each team went to top of hill . 1 PAX from each team carried 2 water jugs (88lbs) to top of hill while remaining PAX did Squats until handoff of jug. Once jug gets to top, the next PAX carries it back down and continue handoffs until each PAX has carried jug up once and down once. Then RINSE and REPEAT with Merkins while waiting.

Bucket Brigade
Line up at base of hill. The 2 teams lined up separately shoulder-to-shoulder to start trek uphill. Lowest PAX passes ‘bucket’ (44lb water jug) up to next PAX in line, then runs up to end of the line to receive object again. Once at top, repeat going back down.

Didn’t inform PAX that this was a race on 1st go round. *SURPRISE!*
Winning team did 5 Burpees, while losing team did 10 Burpees. *Soybean* was all in a tithy when he found out it had been a race (his team was poking along).

Amazing what a little extra work can do to motivate PAX to #dobetter.

2nd race was close, but the Bean Team won. Aww Yeah! YHC was tempted to forget the Burpees after this race, but alas, I am an honorable man. Burpees done!

Leave those vile water jugs and mosey to parking lot near shovel flag for:

11s
1 Big Boy Situp (BBS), Bear Crawl 10 yd, 10 Merkins, Back pedal to start
RINSE and REPEAT adding to BBS and subtracting from Merkins
by one to keep total at 11. Hold plank until All-In
(modified to Al Gore, cuz my arms were spent)

Soybean was a true Q and joined the 2 PAX who were finishing up 11s, or was it just because he didn’t want to hold plank or a tree.

MARY:
Freddy Mercury x 30 IC, 60 count rest (don’t want anybody keeling over on me), American Hammers x 25 IC, another 60 count (same reason, plus fluffing for time), asked Soybean to lead Gas Pumps x 20 IC.

COUNT-OFF & NAME-O-RAMA
9 PAX: Soybean (Nantan), Photoshop (QiC), Bell Ringer (AOQ), Cupid, HomeWrecker, Ringless, 3 FNGs:  Dundee, Big Brown, Upstate

Prayers/Praises
Upstate – buying first house after 2 years of marriage. Prayers for his M and him to relax and trust in this process.
HomeWrecker – final class for being licensed to foster and then hopefully adopt.
Cupid – just sent 16yo daughter off on a mission trip to Guatemala
Bell Ringer – pray for growth and effectiveness of Hernando AO

MOLESKIN:
Awed at how God works. We were trying to make it where Soybean didn’t have to come down to Hernando again today, but there were no other PAX from Memphis that could. So he did. And he got to chat with another PAX who will be fostering and possibly adopting at some point. How cool is that?!?

Wish I had video of that *2nd Buckets Brigade* race. It looked comical from where I was in the fire drill line.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
2nd Anniversary convergence at Mothership on August 17, 2019.
